A current transformer (CT) is a type of transformer used for measuring alternating current (AC). A current transformer operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, converting the high current on the primary side into a lower current on the secondary side for measurement. A current transformer consists of a closed iron core and windings. As the name suggests, current transformers are typically used to reduce current in a way that is very predictable with respect to current and phase. For example, you might want to measure the current consumed by an electric motor to determine if the motor is under light load or overloaded.
